Detailed description

Located in a tiny rural village in the Soule region of the Basque Country, this Medieval manoir of 558m² is perfect for anyone hoping to find an exquisitely renovated country residence which is ready to move into, along with a pretty garden that is easy to care for all year round. The architectural style of this manoir is typically Souletin with its chalk-white façade and very steep roofs to stop any snow settling. Many nobles and famous academics have lived in the property over the years, perhaps most notably the founder of the academy for the Basque language.

The current owners bought the manoir in 2002 and have subsequently restored it with sensitivity, style and elegance, using materials of the finest quality. The property is L-shaped, with a three-storey wing which faces south and a two-storey wing which faces west. The south-facing three-storey wing also has an attic space, which has been converted into a cosy home cinema.

The understated front door opens into an entrance hall with an ancient wooden staircase. The main reception room has ancient arrow slits in the walls and a specially commissioned mosaic on the floor in front of the large stone fireplace.

A smaller reception room has a floor in the same Sarrancolin marble used in the construction of the Château de Versailles and the Palais Garnier; the adjacent billiard room also has a marble floor. There is also an office which could be used as an additional bedroom. The spacious kitchen is equipped with a vast Lacanche range cooker - and the informal dining area in the kitchen overlooks the gardens and a little stream.

The first floor encompasses both wings of the manoir. In total, there are four bedrooms and a study, which could also be used as a bedroom. Two of the four bedrooms are master bedroom suites, one with a dressing room and an en suite Louis XV-style bathroom, the other with an en suite shower room. On the second floor of the south-facing wing, there is access to an exterior covered gallery with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The landing on this floor has been transformed into a wonderful library with floor to ceiling bookcases - and there is a bedroom with an en suite shower room. From this floor, it is possible to access the unconverted loft space in the west-facing wing, which is large enough to create an additional bedroom and bathroom. On the third floor of the south-facing wing, there is a small home cinema.

The manoir is set in enclosed gardens of 1,665m² (0.4 acres), which are planted with mature trees and flowering shrubs. The lawn in front of the property is a perfect spot for outdoor dining, for children to play and for early evening aperitifs as the sun sets over the hills and mountains beyond the village.

Situated in the Basque Country, but close to the Béarn and its famous Jurançon vineyards, there are always things to see and do all year round. For mountain lovers, there are several ski resorts not far away in the Pyrénées. If you prefer watersports, there are numerous lakes and rivers throughout this wonderful region, along with beach resorts on the Atlantic coast, which are perfect for surfers and for family days out.
