Detailed description

Dating back to the 17th century, this delightful manor house is situated in a pretty hilltop village, which is traversed by the Chemin de St-Jacques de Compostelle pilgrim route. Originally built for the Dufourcq family in the mid 16th century, it was then rebuilt as a two-storey house in the mid 17th century after it was partially destroyed by lightning.

The original architectural features, such as the oak staircase and wood panelling, are beautifully cared for, yet there are many luxurious modern comforts, including power showers, gas central heating and a marvellous swimming pool in the grounds.

From the main courtyard, the front door opens into a sumptuous entrance hall. Straight ahead is a beautiful wooden staircase which dates back to the 17th century. To the side of the staircase is a small door and short staircase up to a mezzanine floor, where there is a cloakroom and a small antiques showroom for Bed and Breakfast guests to buy a souvenir.

To the right of the entrance hall is a beautiful kitchen with a huge fireplace and a wooden “dog wheel” mounted on the wall next to it. A terrier dog would be placed inside the wheel and made to run. The turning wheel would then rotate a spit over the kitchen fire. Rest assured, the dog wheel is no longer in use, although it is thought to be one of only four in Europe in working order!

To the left of the entrance hall is a magnificent oak-panelled dining room, with access to the swimming pool and grounds at the back of the house. Adjacent to the dining room is a spacious sitting room with a separate office, which was once used as a Protestant chapel.

The ancient wooden staircase leads up to a superb landing of 28m² on the first floor. There are four bedrooms on this floor: a master-bedroom suite with a dressing room and en suite bathroom; a family suite with two bedrooms and an en suite shower room; a fourth bedroom with an en suite shower room. On the second floor, a galleried landing and sitting area are shared by three more bedrooms, each with an en suite shower room.

Set in enclosed grounds of 2,500m², the manor house has two inner courtyards at the front of the house and an outdoor dining terrace and courtyard at the back. There are also two unconverted barns adjacent to the house which could provide a possible 500m² of extra living space. From the courtyard at back of the house, steps lead down to a lower level with a secluded garden and a swimming pool (10m x 5m). The pool has a solar-powered shower and is surrounded by a paved sun terrace.

This wonderful manor house is close to several rivers for exciting watersports, a choice of ski resorts in the Pyrénées and numerous surfing and family beaches on the Atlantic coast. The Medieval market town of Orthez is 10 minutes away, where you will find a great selection of shops and other amenities; the historic city of Pau and its airport are just 25 minutes away. In addition, the world-famous Chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrim route passes right in front the manor house en route for Spain, ensuring Bed and Breakfast bookings all year round from tired and hungry pilgrims!
